Hi jcoh, I was stymied by this one, too. I had to look it up in the xkcd forum: It's that in panels 2 and 4 Mr Beret is not giving his keys to somebody, he is receiving the keys for the next car from a car dealer. (Sorry to spoil your mystery)
So if I was any good with MS Paint, I would improve the comic by drawing the other guy in those panels a big big top hat with "CAR DEALER" written on it. (Just as Randall did some time ago with a "HEAT LAMP")

On second thought, I would make the hat big enough to fit the text
"car dealer (not the hatless guy from the other panels (nor Mal from Firefly (unfortunately)))"

In answer to Tomr's challenge, they're looking the opposite way from the original. You know, the way people look at the direction they hear sounds from, except apparently in the xkcd world.
